There is so much hype around the dangers of exposure to the Sun, that we cannot help becoming very concerned. So how do we draw a happy balance between paranoia and carefree abandon?
Climate change and increased temperatures is a topic that is constantly at the forefront of news bulletins and TV programs. There is no doubt that our modern lifestyle has affected the climate, and with it comes an increased awareness of how rays of the sun cause damage to our skin.
The problem with topical issues is that they often get blown out of proportion and take on a life of their own. Sensationalism leads to all sorts of ‘experts’ giving conflicting opinions that often lead to confusion, panic and sometimes even incorrect information.
In fact – the effects of sunshine on our bodies is actually beneficial and necessary for our health.
It is true that we need to take precaution against the harmful effects of over-exposure to the sun, but there is no need to be paranoid about this. In most cases it just requires common sense and a few practical measures to stay protected. Here are some of them:
- Most of the sun damage we have incurred was as children when we played outside and suffered really bad sunburn. The effects only become visible and serious at a much later stage in life. With this in mind, make sure to take precautions to protect your children. See to it that they wear sun screen and that this is re-applied regularly.
- It is important to find shade, drink water, keep cool and use sun screen yourself. Often your body will tell you that you need to take action. If you feel too hot, thirsty or fatigued – take action.
- Always wear a hat with a wide brim and a cover over the head. Also remember that your neck can be exposed without you being aware of it.
- Choose the correct sun glasses.
- Clothing that is dark, with a closely woven fabric is best as the suns rays are absorbed.
- White clothing reflects the sun’s rays.
Our Sun Sleeves are a very powerful product in staying protected, especially when we engage in sports or other activities that require us to be in the sun for any length of time. When we get too hot we can just pull them down and cool off for a while. When we get inside we can take them off and do not have to stay in long sleeves.
In conclusion: Be aware of the sun and take practical reasonable precaution. There is no need to be paranoid, just to be aware!
